Gamma-Ray Polarimetry of Two X-Class Solar Flares

چکیده

We have performed the first polarimetry of solar flare emission at γ-ray energies (0.2–1MeV). These observations were performed with the Reuven Ramaty High Energy Solar Spectroscopic Imager (RHESSI) for two large flares: the GOES X4.8-class solar flare of 2002 July 23, and the X17-class flare of 2003 October 28. We have marginal polarization detections in both flares, at levels of 21 ± 9% and -11 ± 5% respectively. These measurements significantly constrain the levels and directions of solar flare γ-ray polarization, and begin to probe the underlying electron distributions. Statistical Modeling of Solar Flare Activity from Empirical Time Series of Soft X-ray Solar Emission

A time series of soft X-ray emission observed on 1974-2007 years (GOES) is analyzed. We show that in the periods of high solar activity 1977-1981, 19881992, 1999-2003 the energy statistics of soft X-ray solar flares for class M and C is well described by a FARIMA time series with Pareto innovations. The model is characterized by two effects. One of them is a long-range dependence (longterm memo...

NuSTAR hard X-ray observation of a sub-A class solar flare

We report a NuSTAR observation of a solar microflare, SOL2015-09-01T04. Although it was too faint to be observed by the GOES X-ray Sensor, we estimate the event to be an A0.1 class flare in brightness. This microflare, with only ∼5 counts s detector observed by RHESSI, is fainter than any hard X-ray (HXR) flare in the existing literature. The microflare occurred during a solar pointing by the h...

Rhessi Observations of a Simple Large X-ray Flare on 2003 November 3

We present data analysis and interpretation of a simple X-class flare observed with RHESSI on 2003 November 3. In contrast to other X-class flares observed previously, this flare shows a very simple morphology with welldefined looptop (LT) and footpoint (FP) sources. The almost monotonic upward motion of the LT source and increase in separation of the two FP sources are consistent with magnetic...

Measuring X-ray anisotropy in solar flares. Prospective stereoscopic capabilities of STIX and MiSolFA

Context. During a solar flare, a large percentage of the magnetic energy released goes into the kinetic energy of non-thermal particles, with X-ray observations providing a direct connection to keV flare-accelerated electrons. However, the electron angular distribution, a prime diagnostic tool of the acceleration mechanism and transport, is poorly known. Aims. During the next solar maximum, two...

Polarization evolution accompanying the very early sharp decline of GRB X-ray afterglows

In the synchrotron radiation model, the polarization property depends on both the configuration of the magnetic field and the geometry of the visible emitting region. Some peculiar behaviors in the X-ray afterglows of Swift gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), such as energetic flares and the plateau followed by a sharp drop, might by highly linearly-polarized because the outflows powering these behaviors ...
